Leaky Roof Repair and the Best Swinging Tire

 
The solution to leaky roof repair is finding the problem; but in this case it made a lot of kids mad. We were called out to quaint two story country home to help the homeowner find out why water was coming in along his dining room wall. We were greeted as we drove up by 4 ten year old boys running up to our truck. They couldn’t wait to tell us about their great tire swing and wanted to show us. We told them we would check it out
after talking to their dad.
 
The owner told the leak after the rain last week and he couldn’t understand it since he had  never had roof problems before. We said we would take a look.
 
The roof had a good shingle covering and none of them were loose or curled. We were not finding any damage that might indicate a traveling leak from one section of the roof to another.
 
We discovered a rope tied around the chimney, draped over a large branch and at the end hung a large truck tire. The sudden jerk each time one of them jumped off the branch was causing the multiple layers of roofing tar that had been applied around the base of the chimney to crack.
 
We were able to repair the area with step flashing by weaving pieces of sheet metal into the shingles and sealing it permanently. The boy’s dad helped them tie the rope to the tree instead.
